Background: David Shepherd is a soldier in the army of the Kingdom of Gilboa. Gilboa was at war with the Republic of Gath, and David was able to single handedly rescue Prince Jack Benjamin from behind enemy lines and destroy a Goliath--one of Gath's tanks--making him an instant hero with the people of Gilboa. King Silas promotes David to Captain and brings him to Shiloh, the capital of Gilboa and makes him his military media liasion. David meets and falls in love with the Princess, Michelle, though they carry on their relationship in secret for a while, because Michelle once made a promise to God during an illness to be his bride, and chaste, and Silas reminds her of it hoping to stem David's influence with the people. Silas sees David as a threat, having been told that his own reign is now disfavored by God, and seeing a crown of butterflies descend on David as they once did on him. At first he plots to kill David, then decides to use him, and David is pulled into court politics, not really knowing all the things going on behind the scenes. Michelle finally makes her choice to be with David and break her vow of chastity. She also informs her father of their relationship, which Silas takes as a betrayal by David. Silas accuses David of treason, falsely, setting up a court with fake evidence and making Jack prosecute him. Michelle, discovering she is pregnant and wanting to protect the child, refuses to give evidence for David that would have cleared him. Jack, however, turns on his father at the last minute and tells everyone Silas set up the whole thing and David is innocent. Even so, Silas sentences David to death. It is only a coup carried out by Jack and his uncle William that saves David at the last minute and Jack asks David to be his right hand. However, William is just trying to restart the war with Gath, and so David goes to find an injured Silas and return him to the throne, forcing William to flee and denying Jack his crown. Despite this act, when Silas receives direct communication from God that he is to step down from the throne and give it to David as his successor, he swears David and God are his enemies. He and David have a fight, with David swearing he never wanted the throne, but neither will he serve Silas anymore. David and Michelle are secretly married--though she doesn't tell him about the child--and he flees into Gath to hide until the time for him to take the throne comes, promising to come back for her. It is at this point that he enters hearts_andminds

Personality: David is idealistic, naive, honorable and honest. He is completely unprepared for city and court life, a country boy at heart and a simple soldier who enlisted to save his home and serve his King. He has no idea how to navigate the waters of court intrigue, because he is someone who speaks his mind, and tells things how they are. He has no taste for deception, no gift for lying. All he wants is peace. He believes in his King, utterly, and when he finds out Silas isn't worth believing in, it breaks something in him. Likewise, when Michelle doesn't come to his trial, part of him shatters. He doesn't want to die, but part of him bitterly accepts it, because he's so disillusioned. But even so, when he doesn't die, when he sees his country about to go back to war, when all he has to do to have a place of honor in it is to stand silent and support Jack and William, he risks his life to go save a man who just tried to kill him and hatch a plan with him to give him back the country so they can have peace. He hates Silas, but he still believes Gilboa is best under his rule rather than William's. He still believes Silas will let him go for that service, and when Silas tries to kill him again, he finally breaks in a fury, beating Silas with his fists--but even then, he stops short of killing him, and just leaves, because Silas is still his King, and he is not a murderer. He is terrified by the idea of a destiny. All he longs for is peace with his brothers, back home with his mother, or a family with Michelle, a place to live in peace and love and harmony, and he knows that what God has planned for him will deny him that for a long time, so he fights against it, grasping at the illusion of peace and finding it always out of his reach.

Physical Description: 5'9"; short blond hair with a bit of a curl to it, even though he wears it in a military cut; blue eyes; clean shaven; fit but not muscular.
